Winter Caribou Hunts

             George River Caribou Herd

Labrador has the largest free-roaming herd in the world. The George River Herd, numbering some 600,000 barren ground caribou, migrate from the Labrador sea to James Bay in Quebec.

Barren ground caribou are much smaller than the woodland caribou, with the prime stags tipping the scales at 200-225 lbs. on the hoof. Their racks are huge in comparison to their body weight. Many Boone and Crockett specimens have come from the George River Herd.

The herd migrates from northern Quebec and Labrador in the fall, to Western Labrador and Eastern Quebec, and then travels back north in the late winters, where they calf in the spring on the Northern barrens of Quebec and Labrador.

                  Winter Hunts

The Winter Hunt will begin with the arrival of the caribou migration and the opening of the caribou hunting zones in our area, usually around Nov 10th.
